The resort received LEED certification in 2012 for its sustainable design, including geothermal heating and cooling systems; recycled content in building materials, furnishings and the resort playground; native prairie landscaping, low-flow toilets and showerheads and more. The Preserve, an 18-hole championship golf course at the resort, has reduced its chemical use, expanded habitat areas, and uses numerous water-saving strategies. The resorts golf course design received the National Audubon Societys seal of approval for protecting the environment, conserving natural resources and providing wildlife habitat. Another example is Honey Creek Resorts Activity Center that was designed by Iowa State University students as part of a national sustainable design competition. Passive solar design, insulation, innovative day lighting and highly efficient appliances all contribute to the energy efficient construction.
